Nominations are open to all Zambian artists. Nomination is open in respect of any qualifying recording artist, group or producer being a person (s) who:
- Is/are a Zambian citizen(s) or has been a permanent resident(s) in Zambia for a minimum of six (6) months on the date of nomination; and
- Provided the Nominee is a Zambian artist and owns at least Sixty percent (60%) of the master recording contained in the nomination in question where any other part of the master is owned by a non-Zambian Artist;
- The same applies to artists comprising duos or groups, provided that not less than Sixty (60) percent of its members comply with the criteria set out above;
- The Kwacha Awards Committee reserve the right to request proof that all artists, producers, qualify as set out herein.
- Unless the category states otherwise (for example, Best Sound Production), international collaborations and or productions between Zambian artists and international artists are allowed, provided the Zambian artist(s) participation is given equal or full rights to the song.
All recordings nominated for the Kwacha Music Awards must have been commercially released in Zambia during the period under review. The period under review will be the immediate past 12 months from the closing date of nominations. Exceptions will be made for recordings released prior to the 12 months under review, in the case where the recording(s) was/were commercially made available in the period under review or re-released in the period under review. The Kwacha Awards Committee is entitled to request proof at its discretion.
The following categories are excluded from this requirement;
- Lifetime Achievement
- Kwacha Special Award
- Humanitarian
- Best International Achievement
- Best Sound Production
- Most Conscious Song
